What frightened me at Auschwitz was that someone had to decide to do this. And then Birkenau was just that idea on steroids.
Birkenau was just so big. Destroy a town, create this death camp, and have industrial scale mass killing.
Auschwitz looked big at the beginning, but it was a tiny fraction of the killing machine. Birkenau was really the end result of the sick idea.
