Went into The Colours Within completely blind.
Didn't expect a film that opens in a Catholic school to end on a live gig. Didn't expect half of it to be band life and making music either.
Totsuko sees colours on people. It looks pretty, and I walked out wondering what the world would look like if you could see them too. She's an airhead. Funny to watch, but more a vehicle for the other two than an actual main character, never the centre of attention the way you'd expect from an anime lead.
The performance at the end earned it. The first song caught me off guard. On a cinema sound system it hits you in the chest, the YouTube version isn't even in the same league.
Big shoutout to Kensuke Ushio for that music at the end. Three songs, three completely different styles, one for each of the three of them.
8/10.
The three they played at the end, there's a lot more music in the film than just these:
- Apology Letter - the opener
- Walk - Rui's theremin one
- Amen, I'm Going Somewhere - the pop one I keep replaying
